Indonesia Calls for Global Action to Save the World’s Oceans at International Forum

Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono called for joint action at the global level to save and restore the world’s increasingly threatened oceans.

He emphasized that damage to marine ecosystems has now reached a serious level due to climate change, pollution, rising ocean acidity, and illegal fishing practices.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, he stressed that marine protection cannot be achieved by a single country alone but requires global collaboration among governments, the private sector, and the international community.

Indonesia itself has reaffirmed its commitment to leading the implementation of blue economy policies as a strategy to ensure the sustainability of marine resources.

Concrete steps taken by Indonesia include expanding marine conservation areas to tens of millions of hectares across various national waters.

Additionally, the government has implemented a quota-based fishing system to prevent overfishing and illegal fishing.

Indonesia is also promoting the development of sustainable aquaculture and strengthening the protection of coastal areas and small islands.

Efforts to address marine debris are also being continuously strengthened through an integrated approach from land to sea.

Trenggono highlighted the importance of coastal ecosystems such as mangroves and seagrass beds, which play a significant role in carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation.

Indonesia is said to possess enormous “blue carbon” potential, giving it a strategic role in global climate stability.

Meanwhile, the European Union emphasized the importance of transforming the maritime sector, including the use of clean energy in the shipping industry to reduce carbon emissions.

Indonesia also announced plans to host the 2026 Ocean Impact Summit in Bali as a global forum to generate concrete action on ocean conservation.
