The commemoration of the 118th National Awakening Day (Harkitnas) in Teluk Bintuni Regency served as an opportunity to underscore the importance of a positive and responsible digital transformation.
The ceremony, held in the courtyard of the Teluk Bintuni Regent’s Office on May 20, 2026, carried the theme “Nurturing the Nation’s Youth for National Sovereignty.”
Teluk Bintuni Regent Yohanis Manibuy stated that the challenges facing the nation’s struggle have evolved in tandem with the changing times and technological advancements.
According to him, while the struggle once focused on defending the nation’s territory, today’s society must also be able to safeguard information sovereignty amid the rapid development of the digital world.
He highlighted the significant influence of social media on children and adolescents, emphasizing the need for collective attention to ensure technology is used wisely.
The Teluk Bintuni Regency government is committed to enhancing digital literacy education through relevant agencies, particularly the Communication and Information Office (Diskominfo).
Outreach programs will focus on helping the public, especially the younger generation, to utilize technology and social media in a smart, productive, and responsible manner.
Additionally, the local government aims to mitigate the negative impacts of the digital world by strengthening understanding of healthy and safe internet usage.
The regent hopes that the spirit of struggle of the nation’s founders will continue to be passed down to the current generation, not only in the form of nationalism, but also through readiness to face the digital age.
According to him, the ability to utilize technology positively is a crucial factor in supporting regional development and the future of Papua’s youth.
