Rupiah Strengthens After BI Raises Interest Rates

The exchange rate of the rupiah against the U.S. dollar strengthened on May 21, 2026, according to Bank Indonesia’s JISDOR data.

The rupiah was trading at around Rp17,685 per U.S. dollar after previously facing significant pressure in the financial markets.

This strengthening was driven by the market’s positive response to Bank Indonesia’s decision to raise the benchmark interest rate.

BI raised the interest rate by 50 basis points to 5.25 percent as a measure to maintain exchange rate stability and strengthen investor confidence.

This policy is seen as helping to stem pressure on the rupiah amid ongoing global uncertainty.

In addition to domestic factors, movements in the US dollar and international geopolitical tensions have also influenced exchange rate fluctuations in recent weeks.

Historical JISDOR data for May 2026 shows that the rupiah exchange rate has been quite volatile.

The rupiah briefly traded around Rp17,300 per US dollar before weakening to near Rp17,700 per US dollar.

Nevertheless, Bank Indonesia’s intervention measures and monetary policies are seen as beginning to have a positive impact on the stability of the national foreign exchange market.

The government and monetary authorities continue to monitor global developments to maintain economic resilience and the stability of the rupiah exchange rate moving forward.
