The West Papua Center for Agricultural Modernization (BRMP) is currently developing a corn seed breeding program in Manokwari to support the expansion of cultivated land to approximately 200 hectares.
The program began with a demonstration plot of approximately 1 hectare, with a target seed production of about 6 tons to be used to support agricultural development in the region.
The Head of BRMP West Papua stated that independent seed development is a crucial step in strengthening regional food security.
This effort also aims to reduce dependence on seed supplies from outside West Papua.
To ensure production quality, drying facilities have been prepared to maintain seed quality after harvest.
During a field visit to Macuan Village, Masni District, Manokwari, the BRMP also assessed the condition of corn crops in the field.
Monitoring revealed an infestation of armyworms, but overall, crop growth continues to show positive development.
In addition to seed production, the BRMP is also introducing the interplanting method to improve land efficiency and accelerate agricultural production cycles.
This method allows for replanting before the harvest season ends, thereby optimizing land productivity.
Local police authorities are supporting this program by emphasizing the importance of data-driven planning and interagency collaboration.
Overall, this program is expected to strengthen food security while establishing Manokwari as a center for corn seed development and production in West Papua.
