National Container Traffic Grows, Reflecting Stronger Economic Activity

Indonesia’s economic activity in early 2026 showed positive growth, as evidenced in part by the increase in container traffic at various major national ports.

As of April 2026, the container traffic handled by PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) or Pelindo reached approximately 6.42 million TEUs, an increase of about 7 percent compared to the same period the previous year, which stood at 5.99 million TEUs.

This increase indicates that national logistics activity continues to grow amid ongoing global economic dynamics and uncertainty.

Ports play a strategic role in maintaining the smooth flow of the supply chain as they serve as the primary gateway for the distribution of industrial raw materials, consumer goods, export commodities, and various investment needs.

According to Pelindo, the largest growth came from the international container segment, which increased by approximately 11 percent compared to the same period the previous year.

This performance was supported by export growth of about 10 percent and an increase in imports of about 12 percent, reflecting the continued vitality of Indonesia’s foreign trade.

Meanwhile, domestic container traffic also recorded growth of about 4 percent. This indicates that the distribution of goods between regions within the country remains strong and supports national economic activity.

Strong trade ties with various countries in the Asian region, particularly China and ASEAN nations, have also contributed to the growth of Indonesia’s logistics and trade activities.

Some container-based export commodities that have seen an increase include vegetable oils and fats, machinery and mechanical equipment, electrical equipment, and various chemical products.

On the other hand, the increase in imports of machinery, industrial equipment, optical instruments, and chemicals indicates that investment, production capacity expansion, and the development of industrial downstreaming programs across various sectors are still ongoing.

Growth in container traffic is evident at several major ports, such as Tanjung Priok Port, Tanjung Emas Port, and Tanjung Perak Port, which serve as hubs for national trade activities.

Overall, the increase in container traffic in early 2026 is a positive signal for the Indonesian economy as it reflects the continued growth of trade, investment, industry, and goods distribution.
