Papua Pegunungan Provincial Government Facilitates Peace in Inter-Tribal Conflict in Wamena

The Papua Pegunungan Provincial Government facilitated the resolution of an inter-tribal conflict that occurred in Wamena, Jayawijaya Regency.

The peace process was carried out through traditional mechanisms involving various symbols of reconciliation, such as the release of bowstrings, the breaking of bows and arrows, and the signing of a peace agreement.

The ceremony aims to ensure that the two warring parties do not engage in tribal warfare again in the future.

The peace event was attended by Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Ribka Haluk, Governor of Papua Pegunungan John Tabo, and a number of regional leaders from the surrounding areas.

Governor of Papua Pegunungan John Tabo stated that this traditional ceremony symbolizes the end of inter-tribal conflict in Wamena.

He hopes similar incidents will no longer occur in the Papua Pegunungan region because the people there are essentially one family.

In his view, every dispute should be resolved through peaceful means and traditional mechanisms that have been passed down through generations.

Additionally, the local government has asked the regents to no longer use government funds to resolve traditional conflicts, including the practice of payment known as “head money.”

John Tabo emphasized that conflict resolution must once again prioritize traditional values and symbols of peace, one of which is the use of a pig as part of the reconciliation ceremony.

The Papua Pegunungan Provincial Government has also urged that social, educational, health, and economic activities in Wamena return to normal as soon as possible.

The government has confirmed that the security situation is beginning to improve and has asked businesses not to hesitate to resume shipping essential goods to the region.
