The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) is a public research university located in Bandung, West Java.
This institution is known as Indonesia’s first and oldest engineering university, with a history dating back to 1920 during the Dutch colonial period.
At its founding, the institution was named Technische Hoogeschool te Bandoeng before officially becoming the Bandung Institute of Technology in 1959.
The ITB campus buildings were designed by Dutch architect Henri Maclaine Pont, incorporating a concept that blends modern architectural styles with traditional Indonesian elements.
In its early years, the campus offered only one main department: civil engineering and water resources.
Over time, ITB has grown into one of the most prestigious universities in Indonesia, particularly in the fields of science, technology, arts, and design.
ITB now has various faculties and schools covering civil engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, architecture, fine arts, mathematics, astronomy, and earth sciences.
Several programs at the campus have also received ABET international accreditation as recognition of the quality of education provided.
ITB’s main campus is located on Ganesha Street in Bandung and is equipped with a variety of academic and non-academic support facilities.
These facilities include a library, research laboratories, a sports center, an art gallery, and access to the Bosscha Observatory in Lembang.
In addition to being known for the quality of its education, ITB also has a long history of producing prominent Indonesian figures.
Some of ITB’s notable alumni include Indonesia’s first president, Sukarno; its third president, B. J. Habibie; as well as numerous scientists, ministers, business leaders, and other national public figures.
