Batam City Government Prepares New Strategy to Address Daily Waste Surge

The Batam City Government is developing a new strategy to address the waste problem, the volume of which continues to increase every day.

One of the planned measures is to improve waste management through collaboration with the private sector and the construction of an Integrated Waste Processing Facility (IWPF).

Batam’s Deputy Mayor, Li Claudia Chandra, emphasized that the division of responsibilities between the government and the private sector must be clearly defined so that the waste management system operates more effectively, purposefully, and measurably.

The Batam City Government has also instructed the Environmental Agency (DLH) to immediately prepare a technical work plan to support the implementation of this program.

In addition to strengthening cooperation and infrastructure, the local government is also reviewing changes to waste management regulations due to increasingly limited service capacity and disposal land.

Currently, the volume of waste in Batam reaches approximately 1,300 tons per day, in line with the city’s growing population and continuously increasing economic activity.

These conditions are driving the government to immediately transform waste management practices to make them more modern and integrated.

Through this new strategy, the Batam City Government hopes the waste management system can operate more sustainably while reducing the accumulation of waste, which has long been a source of public complaint.

The government is optimistic that collaborative efforts between the government and the private sector will improve the quality of urban sanitation services and keep Batam’s environment healthy and comfortable.
