Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy Accelerates the Elimination of Blank Spots with Fiber, BTS, and Satellites

The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Kemkomdigi) continues to accelerate the elimination of blank spots in Indonesia by strengthening the national telecommunications infrastructure.

This effort involves utilizing a combination of fiber-optic technology, base station construction, and satellites to reach areas that still have difficulty accessing the internet.

This program focuses on underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost (3T) regions, including non-commercial areas that have not yet been optimally reached by digital services.

Deputy Minister of Kemkomdigi, Nezar Patria, explained that Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites are one of the strategic solutions for providing connectivity in remote areas and regions affected by disasters.

Nevertheless, the government continues to adapt technology use based on geographical conditions and on-the-ground needs, ranging from fiber-optic networks to the construction of base transceiver stations (BTS).

The government is also continuously evaluating the effectiveness of LEO satellite technology, as it still has certain limitations, such as the potential for connection disruptions due to weather conditions.

Therefore, satellite technology is positioned as a complementary tool to accelerate the equitable distribution of digital access, rather than a full replacement for existing telecommunications infrastructure.

In addition to expanding internet access, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Transformation is also strengthening the development of the national backbone network and expanding fiber-optic connectivity to various regions.

The government aims to ensure that up to 98 percent of Indonesia’s population is free from blank spots by 2029 as part of the acceleration of the national digital transformation.

Through the strengthening of this digital infrastructure, the government hopes that internet access will become more equitable and support educational, economic, and public service activities throughout Indonesia.
